If you have high hopes for Batman Begins, prepare to be somewhat disappointed. Because while not a disaster, Christopher Nolan's reinvention of the Caped Crusader franchise is decidedly mediocre.
Batman Begins (Slant magazine)
And if you're not in the superhero mood, there are always other films: good French dramas, junky French horror films, spellbinding Japanese animé extravaganzas, big-screen remakes of lame '50s TV shows, British children's fairy tales, and so-so "classic" French noirs. All of which are reviewed below (and in that order):
This weekend:
5x2 (filmcritic.com)
High Tension (filmcritic.com)
Howl's Moving Castle (filmcritic.com) - also available on Wired.com!
The Honeymooners (Slant magazine)
Upcoming:
Mirrormask (Slant magazine)
Elevator to the Gallows (Slant magazine)
I like the (unintentional?) wordplay:
"somewhat disappointed" ... "not a disaster"
Contrasted with: "decidedly mediocre".

HA! No, it wasn't intentional. I guess it was just that, after working on the review (and talking about the film) for a day or two, I was sick of it by the time I wrote this post. Just didn't feel like being nice.
